Cerner and Nuance Communications work together as partners to deliver state of the art healthcare solutions specifically for clinicians that leverage both voice and mobile technologies to optimize clinician workflow and to maximize the benefits of electronic health records (EHRs). Mobility and voice are key components that now drive HER. Combining mobility and voice into a set of well-integrated services provides a number of unique capabilities that allow doctors and clinicians to accurately record and retrieve patient data. It is estimated that current non-EHR systems cause up to 25 percent inaccuracy in accessing patient data – a major healthcare issue.

The two companies have decided to tighten their working relationship and have jointly announced that they have both signed a new worldwide agreement that will allow Cerner to directly embed Nuance’s cloud-based medical voice recognition technology into Cerner’s full portfolio of mobile EHR solutions. This integration will create a new class of Cerner mobile healthcare solutions on smartphones and tablets that the two companies strongly believe will enable clinicians to – once again, accurately - capture more complete patient notes, navigate applications and search for information while on-the-go – simply by using their voices.

Cerner, which began its life digitizing paper-based processes, now offers solutions that are currently licensed by roughly 9,300 healthcare facilities globally. They include over 2,650 hospitals, 3,750 physician practices, 40,000 physicians, 500 ambulatory facilities (such as laboratories, ambulatory centers, cardiac facilities, radiology clinics and surgery centers), 800 home health facilities, 40 employer sites and 1,600 retail pharmacies. The new voice-enabled capabilities will find their way into many of these healthcare ecosystems. A key goal for both vendors is to simplify the large scale deployment of these integrated technologies and to reduce the overall cost of ownership for their customers.

Nuance’s technology is a component of Cerner’s PowerChart Touch, which was announced at the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in February. Nuance’s 360|SpeechAnywhere medical voice recognition platform is embedded within PowerChart Touch. PowerChart Touch is a mobile, cloud-based solution that is part Cerner’s Millennium+ portfolio. PowerChart Touch delivers role and venue-based mobile workflows which allow physicians to perform their job duties directly from a mobile device. PowerChart Touch delivers a true native application experience across an array of platforms.

Cerner and Nuance have also announced the availability and integration of Nuance’s radiology reporting suite, PowerScribe 360, with Cerner’s RadNet Radiology Information System (RIS). This combined solution allows radiologists to dictate, in real-time, reports that are integrated directly and instantly with patient records – again, innovation that leads to more accuracy.
“The expansion of our partnership with Nuance demonstrates our commitment to provide state-of-the-art solutions to customers across the globe,” says Don Bisbee, senior vice president of DeviceWorks at Cerner. “By incorporating Nuance’s voice recognition capabilities into our core clinical applications including our latest mobile solution, PowerChart Touch, we are able to provide the healthcare industry with a simple, fast method of capturing complex medical information within the patient record at the point-of-care.”

“Cerner’s most recent mobile innovations are a prime example of how these solutions are transforming the EHR experience today, and a key reason why now is the right time to expand our partnership. Cerner’s solutions are enabling clinicians to experience a fully functional EHR – anytime and anywhere – and voice is playing an important role in making this a reality,” notes Janet Dillione, executive vice president and general manager of Nuance Healthcare. “We are confident that intuitive, voice-enabled technologies with deep Cerner integration will spur further industry innovation, improve the clinician experience and help focus efforts on the core mission – providing quality patient care.”

The combination of  Embedded System voice and mobility within the healthcare industry is clearly a highly effective technology match. The two technologies – when combined – effectively create more accurate data capture and usage. That accuracy saves lives. It is good to see companies such as Nuance and Cerner bringing voice and mobility together. We look forward to the next products that will emerge from the newly enhanced partnership.
